Dr. John E. Sylvester is a radiation oncologist at the Lakewood Ranch Oncology Center who is internationally recognized as one of the foremost authorities on prostate seed implant (permanent) brachytherapy, having personally performed more than 3,000 prostate brachytherapy procedures. Board certified in radiation oncology by the American Board of Radiology and a graduate of the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, he has more than four decades of experience and is affiliated with HCA Florida Blake Hospital and Lakewood Ranch Medical Center. He helped develop several technical refinements to the procedure, including improved urethral visualization and optimal use of R.A.P.I.D. strand, and he offers advanced approaches such as THINStrand seed implants and ERB prostate immobilization during IG-IMRT. Dr. Sylvester is one of three clinicians who authored the most recent American Brachytherapy Society (ABS) prostate guidelines used worldwide, and he co-authored and edited The Prostate Cancer Treatment Book along with numerous articles and textbook chapters. He is a member of the ABS, ASTRO, and the American College of Radiology, and his practice is heavily focused on prostate cancer treatment.
